Myspace has implemented a new “security” measure to stop spammers and phishers in their tracks. There’s quite a few downsides to this for us regular users, one being you can’t look at the web address in the status bar of your browser to know what the hell you’re clicking because it’s being redirected through msplinks.com with a bunch of base-64 encoding after it. boo! Example below.
So how do you see the actual url before you click it? Well…
The dude over at Smert.net has written a whole article about msplinks, and the greasemonkey script that decodes the actual url on the page. Nice right? Yeah I thought so too.. Anywho, go leave some thankful comments on his blog to tell him how awesome he is.
If for some reason the link to his script is unavailable, it can also be found at userscripts.org.
Now another problem with this security attempt is that it kills legit links. For example I posted a link to an iphone auction on ebay and the msplink would take you to an “invalid item”, meaning it didn’t encode the url correctly. Now that’s just one example that I’ve come across but I can guarantee that there’s about a million other links that this destroys. I’m kinda hesitant to post this because who knows how long myspace will take to fix their weak attempts to better the site but I’m going to anyway.. just leave out the http: in the link. Good day.

I’m pretty sure msplinks also converts URLs to lower case, as I’ve had some trouble with case-sensitive links.

hey i had my friends space as image links… since the MSP links, i havent been able to make an image into an link… any help? if you look at my page ull see 3 lines of picture links, when i went to change my last friend how i knew to make a image link no longer works… i used to go to my friends page, click properties on there image and use that address as the picture

What I would like to know, is how this affects privacy.
Previously, clicking a link took your browser directly to the new location, leaving any page you were currently on out of the process.
Now suppose that you are logged into myspace and a link you click forces you to ask myspace servers to decode the link and point you in the right direction. No matter what computer you are sitting at, they can track where you go if you are logged in. Furthermore, with a list of your friends, they can combine this information with how many of your friends visit the same sites you do.
To go to the extreme, if someone posts a link that points to pro-taliban news articles, we know who is interested in what information and who they are associated with.
I’m not really a big privacy nit, but I do have a tendency to play devil’s advocate sometimes. I mean nothing prevents you from NOT clicking a link in the first place… it sounds like msplinks will still give you a link that appears valid until you click it and go nowhere. Then, you are on a list of people who tried accessing a blocked website? I don’t see what problem this really solves.

I took out the http: and left everything else, fixed all the pages I do and it worked!!!
for abut a week, Now, myspace has done something else to the code, thinking they fixed it, I put back in the http: on the link, and it didn’t work. Any new updates or “cures” for this??
